Single Family Housing Program
The Wyoming Department of Corrections and the Wyoming Community Development Authority have worked together to put a new correctional industries program in place to build affordable homes utilizing inmate workers.
This program is located at the Wyoming Honor Farm in Riverton where the Central Wyoming Community College provides necessary training for the inmates. The inmates are trained in construction trades, giving them an opportunity to return to society and earn livable wages. The program provides college credit from Central Wyoming Community College. To date, we have 17 graduates. Upon release from prison, these graduates will provide contractors with qualified trades people to help ease the state's worker shortage.
The homes being built will be sold to low income households at prices below what the market is currently offering. The Wyoming Housing Network, Inc., a statewide non-profit housing organization, is working with interested homebuyers to determine eligibility for the program. The Wyoming Community Development Authority and U.S.D.A. Rural Development can provide affordable financing opportunities for these homebuyers. This will enable these low income households to purchase a home in Wyoming at a time when the economy is booming and the home prices have risen well beyond their means.
It is anticipated that the program will generate approximately 12 homes per year when it is running at its maximum output. The first home will be completed in the Spring of 2008.
